Allusions

1. One allusion to Greek Mythology I found was the Atlas. Atlas was one of the great Titans who were defeated by Zeus. Atlas was forced to Carry the world on his back for the rest of eternity. Thus, the book with the road maps and geography was named after him.

2. The second Allusion to Greek Mythology is our school's Cross Country and Track Team's logos. The logo is a boot with small weeks coming off the back heel. This is alluding to Hermes, who wore a similar shoe which allows him to travel at rapid speeds. Hermes also gave his boots to Perseus before he killed Medusa!

Greek Allusions!

One allusion I found was a Botanical Garden out somewhere called Elysium Gardens. Elysium is the place in the Underworld where all the good people who lived their lives well go after they die. This is to designate the garden as a paradise.
Another allusion to Greek mythology may also be winged feet, which are used to describe things that are fast, especially sporting events like Cross Country and Track. These winged feet refer back to Hermes, because he is the one they originally came from. He wore them so he could get from place to place quickly to deliver messages for Zeus. I can see why he would want to rush, because Zeus doesn't like a particularly patient person.

Mythology

2 Allusions:

1. Atlas who held up the world in Greek Mythology is the name of our book for a colection of maps

2. "Trust the midas touch"= alludes to King Midas' Golden touch.... giving the saying trust the golden touch

Mythology Post

I found a cement company called Medusa Cement Company. It references the myth of Medusa being able to turn people into stone and uses this because it is a globally known myth, which helps because it is an international company.

In a Ferrero Roche commercial, it shows the gods and Olympus eating the candy and dropping a piece to earth. It emphasizes the quality and taste of the product. Not only does it allude to the gods, but their superiority and their love of higher quality things. Although it does not name anyone, it uses the gods as a symbol of their excellence.

One allusion i found was an Atlas, which is a book filled with maps of the world. In greek mythology, there was a god named Atlas who was forced by Zeus to stand forever and hold the weight of the world on his sholders. Therefore, an Atlas, being that it holds maps of the world, is named after this greek god, Atlas.

Another allusion i found was the company Hercules, which makes a high-selling video graphic card. In greek mythology, Hercules is the greatest greek hero to ever live. Therefore, the Hercules company uses thier name as a way to show that thier product is the greatest, just like the Hercules in greek mythology was the greatest. In fact, the companys slogan is, Legendary Strength, Quality, and Performance.

Greek Mythology

The first allusion to greek mythology that I found was in the brand Trident Gum. The trident was a 3 pronged spear used by Poseidon. Literally, Trident translates as "triple-toothed." So therefore, this has to do with a brand that has everything to do with the mouth and teeth.

The second allusion that I see frequently is the brand Nike. Nike was the goddess of victory, so the company is trying to promote that wearing their merchandise will allow you to perform well in the sport that you are participating in.

Greek Mythology

One example I found of Greek mythology in the modern world is a popular brand of women's razors. Venus razors are advertised frequently and are named after Venus the Greek god of love.

A second example of Greek mythology is nike. Nike was a Greek god who could run very fast, and today nike is a popular athletic shoe brand.

Clayton H. Greek Mythology

The first allusion to Greek mythology I found was the Medusa Cement Company. This is ironic because according to myth, if Medusa looked you in the eyes you turned to stone, or in this case: cement.

For my second allusion I used Trident gum. In Greek mythology, the god Poseidon holds his trademark trident which has 3 spikes on it. In Greek, Trident roughly means three-toothed, referencing to teeth and how Trident gym cleanses teeth. This could be how the product came about.

Michelle's Greek Mythology

One Greek allusion I found was of the Greek myth about Apollo. Apollo was the son of Zeus and Leto. He's known mainly for being the god of music and the arts. In New York City there is a theatre called the Apollo Theatre which is very popular for it's music played there. Giving it the name the Apollo Theatre tells us that it is a place of music and the arts.

Another illusion is based on the Greek Goddess, Venus. Venus was known as the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Her name is used for the popular brand of women's razors called Venus. The name gives people the idea that this razor will give the woman a beautiful body and legs if she uses that product. Giving products names with hidden meanings behind them can often beguile the customer to buy their products to earn more money.

~Mythology~

There are many Greek Mythology allusions in everyday life. These allusions are in advertisements, literature, movies ect. The three allusions I found are: Cupid, Nemesis, and Echo. Eros, was the God of love, he was usually described as a boy with wings and an arrow. Cupid is used commonly nowadays on Valentines day. Nemesis is the Greek Goddess of justice and vengeance, she alludes to the word arch-nemesis, or the enemy of a character in novel, often described as the hero's worst enemy. Another allusion I found to Greek Mythology is the word echo, Echo is the nymph from the myth Narcissus, she was punished and was forced to only repeat what others said. This story alludes to the word echo: the repetition of a word.
-Hannah Beilman

Greek Mythology

The first allusion in the modern world is Nike shoes, which alludes to the Greek goddess Nike, who could run fast. They use this allusion so the shoes give you the false impression that you will become more athletic.

Another thing in the modern day world that is considered to be an allusion is Harry Potter's scar, the lightening bolt, which is an allusion to Zeus

Mythology allusions

One allusion to mythology in the world today is the saying "Your Achilles heel will be your downfall". this refers to the hero Achilles who was dipped in the River Stix as a baby and became invincible every where except for his heel where he was held.

Another allusion to mythology in the world is the shoe company Nike. this refers to the Greek god Nike who could run extremely fast.

Myth Allusions

One myth i have realized that i have realized is alluded to in modern society is the venus fly trap. the fly trap lures its prey in by seducing them in a way with a fregrance. This directly relates to Venus the god of love and how she could beguile people into loving her.

This second allusion to Greek mythology i found was Argus, he is a giant watchman with a hundred eyes. This directly alludes to Argus Security, a modern security company, specializing in commercial business protection.

Greek Myth Allusions

In the modern world, I see allusions everywhere. First, there is the Nike shoes which are related to the goddess Nike who could run fast. I think the name is supposed to imply that if you wear these shoes, then you will be able to run really fast.

Another allusion I found was to the cerebrus, or three headed dog in Harry Potter. Fluffy is a three headed dog who guards things, just like the cerebrus in mythology guarded the entrance to Hades.

Greek myth allusion

I read a book series called daughters of the moon. It revolves around the myth of Dianna , goddess of the moon, the human she fell in love Endymion and the demigod children they had together. It also brings in other myths like the goddess hecate, God Zeus, the Gorgon Medusa, Charon, the story of the man who went into hell to save his wife and who sent her staight back because he turned around to look at her before leaving hell.

Greek Mythology Allusions

One allusion to Greek mythology I found was the term, narcissism, which is the characteristic of being selfish or having a very big ego. This term came from the character, Narcissus, from a Greek myth. Narcissism came from this character because Narcissus fell in love with himself when he saw his reflection in a pool of water. Naturally, narcissism means self-centered or conceited.

Another allusion to Greek mythology is the Tennessee Titans football team. In Greek mythology, the titans were strong rulers who controlled the earth before the Olympians. The football team most likely chose the name, Titans, because it means they are in charge and control the game.

Popular Illusions to Greek Mythology

The first allusion I found was an allusion to an every day cleaner, Ajax. It was named after Ajax, who was known for cleaning up the areas of war, when the war was finished.

The second illusion i found was in the commonly used Trident Gum. It was obviously named after the Trident in Greek mythology. Trident literally means three tooth. 'Tria' is Greek for 'three' and 'donti' means 'tooth', hence that is where the gum comes in, i found this to be a droll connection.

Allusions to Mythology

One allusion to Greek mythology i found is Apollo, a famous Music hall in New York who named their theater after the Greek god of music, Apollo. Another allusion is to Nike, the Goddess of victory who runs and flies at great speeds, where Nike running shoes got their name.

Mythology

Tori Puellman
The first Greek myth allusion that I found was to the Nike shoe brand. Nike was the goddess of victory who had the ability to run and fly at great speeds. So, by the brand using the goddess' name it implies that there shoes will make you run very fast and will help you win your races. The second allusion that I was found to was Mercury who was the messenger of God. Ford has a car model with the name Mercury, by using this name it make the car seem heavenly and special, just like Mercury was.

Mythology

One allusion i found in modern day technology would be the brand Venus razors. Venus was the goddess of beauty and love, and considering a razor is a beauty product for women, it makes sense to name the company after that.

The second one i found was for Trident gum. Poseidon, the god of the Sea's weapon was a three prong called the Trident. Trident gum has three flavors and a trident had three prongs. Also tri- means three, and donti- means tooth.

Greek Mythology Allusions

One modern day allusion is Valentines day which involves cupid. Cupid was the god of love.

Another allusion is that Amazon was a Greek goddess and it is now known as an online shopping website.
A mythology allusion I found in modern day was on spongebob. In one of the episodes King Neptune is featured. Neptune was the Roman god of the sea.

The second allusion I found was Trident gum. A trident was the weapon of Posiedin, the Greek god of the sea. It was kind of like a pitch fork but had curved outer points.

Greek allusions

The first greek allusion I found was Nike. Nike was the greek goddess of victory but is now the name of a big clothing/ shoe company. I think they used this allusion to try and convince people to buy their product. Since their name is Nike and that was the goddess of victory, they're saying that buying their product will bring you victory.

The second greek allusion I found was Trident gum. The trident was the weopen used by Poisedon, the god of the sea, and it had three prongs. The Trident company probably chose this name for their gum because it has three flavors and a trident had three prongs.

mythology

The first allusion related to the world that i found is;Ceto, a hideous aquatic creature, she is the horrors of the sea, regarded as the mother of the Gorgons a many other monsters. Ceto Technologies produces high presure sea water.

The second allusion found in the world today is; Chloris, the goddes of flowers and of spring and nature. Chloris Flowers is one of hundreds of florist stores.

Greek Allusions

One Allusion I noticed was that of Mercury. Mercury is the messager god, and today there is a popular car model named Mercury. Saturn is another allusion in which it's a model car today and Saturn is the father of Zeus. A pretty easy allusion that I noticed today was that of Trident. Tirdent is the spear of Posiden and also a gum today.

Greek Allusions by Sandeep Bhangu

The first allusion to Greek Mythology that I noticed was Nike. Nike was the winged goddess of victory, both in battle and peaceful competition. Nike is also an extremely famous shoe company. I believe that the company chose this name to compare their shoes to something that is extremely fast. By giving their shoes this name, it made people more interested. As we all can see, Nike is very popular in our society. The second allusion to Greek Mythology that I noticed was Amazon. Amazon was a female race warrior. Amazon is also a huge online bookstore. I believe that the company chose this to name to show that their company is extremely fast. Also to prove themselves better than other online bookstores. They are prepared take on any other company's prices. Now that I have actually looked around, I have realized that there are many references to Greek Mythology.

Greek Allusion

The first Greek allusion I thought of was the Achilles heel or tendon. The reason this tendon is called the Achilles tendon was because Achilles was invulnerable everywhere except for his heel. He died from a poisoned arrow shot into his heel. He was also known for being the most handsome God, didn't you know that the Achilles tendon was the most handsome tendon in your body?

The second Greek allusion I found was the Apollo Theater in New York. Apollo was the God of music, therefor the theater was named after him.

Greek Allusion post

The first of my Greek allusions isn't so much an allusion as it is a direct reference. A while back in Rolla, MO, a college student snapped from finals. He started stealing his dorm complex's fluorescent light tubes, and only stopped when his vehicle was full. He then took them to the roof of his dorm complex, and started throwing the tubes at passers-by, all the while yelling "I am Zeus! King of the gods!" His stunt could only be stopped when he ran out of tubes, due to the police being targeted as well. His actions made front page in both school and local newspapers, and can be found by looking for the picture of a police car with a fluorescent light tube through it's windshield. Now, around this time of year, chalk drawing frequent the campus referencing the event.

The second of which is from the website TV Tropes, a website devoted to pointing out frequently used plot elements. They have an entry labeled as "Achilles in his tent." It is referencing the mythical Achilles, who moped in his tent while a battle was going on in which only he could play a specific role, and his brother was forced to take his place. Achilles ended up emerging just in time to save his brother. The article explains that many fantasy writers use this, often putting the protagonist in place of Achilles, and the tent simply meaning that the hero is absent.

Greek Allusion

First allusion is my stepbrothers nerf gun called " The Vulcan" , which I think gets the name because the company wanted to portray its explosive power as it is an allusion to the greek god of the volcano. Another allusion is the Midas Touch car repair company. This is an allusion because Midas was the god who could turn anything into gold by touching it.

Shelby STEINGRAEBER

ONe thing I believe I improved on with this recent essay was organization. At the begining of the year, I stuggled with answering the prompt in full. I feel as though I have improved in this writing skill in the past semester.

Essay Reflection

At the beginning of the year my essay had to many needless parts to it and lacked proper word choice. On my second essay I was able to eliminate much of the clutter in the essay and improved my word choicde, but still had trouble with generalization. On this essay I believe that I was able to fully cover all parts of the prompt and explain all of the ideas I was working towards. Hopefully my essay skills will continue to progress as we move on.

Essay Reflection

This year I think that i have improved and still am improving on really sticking to the prompt. Sometimes I would just answer some parts of the prompt but not all parts. I believe that I am getting better in checking that I have all of the prompt answered and that each part or question is supported with quotes and an explanation.

Marissa Pruitt

Essay Reflection!

I believe my essay has improved greatly since the last one. I think this is because I spent a lot more time on it and did not rush like i did the last one. I also looked into the prompt more so i could understand what i was writing and know what it was asking, and i think that helped me so much in my last essay.

essay reflection

my essay has improved some much since the begining of the year. i started off with the basic knowledge of wrinting and eassy with exact five paragraphs and a set amout of quotes and all this stuff and i have grown away from that. My essay has correct MLA format now and accualy follows the promt. i feel i now know how to write a great essay.

Essay Reflection

Since the begining of the year I believe I improved on my essay organization skills. Before my essay, I created a layout of what would be on it and that helped me not stray from my main points. Another thing is the thesis statement. The sheets of paper and discussing a good thesis statement in class really helped me create a more AP like thesis than before.

Essay Relection!

This year I've learned to relax more and get comfortable with my writing. Before, I would always tense up and completely blank out. I mean, I still get stressed out when I work on essays, but at least I can breath now while I do it. With being able to relax, I've also improved in understanding the prompt better and focusing my essay on it. It has helped me to be less general and more specific on my subject. When you understand what you're writing about, it just makes the whole easy better all together and it especially makes it easier to write. It's pretty humbling when it takes you forever to learn something so obvious, such as that. :)
So far this year i have improved on sticking to the promt in my essays and giving specific details to support my writing. Before this year i didnt know how to support my ideas in an essay and any support i provided was not as clear as it could be. Now my writing is more specific and the details flow together.

Essay Reflection

One thing I think I improved on since my last essay is supporting my ideas. Since I started writing my essays last year I have not done a very good job finding quotes and situations to back up my ideas. I was making too many assumptions and not giving as many examples. I think that in my past essay I backed my ideas and thoughts up to line up well with the situations in the book to show what led me to think the things I did.

Essay Reflection

One thing that I believe I have improved on since my first essay was diction. Some of my first essay were poorly worded. Another area where I improved in were my thesis statements. Now that I have been writing more essays, my thesis' have become more accurate at the point I am trying to get across.

Essay Reflection

I greatly improved my essay writing skills this year by making my thesis clearer and focusing on it through out the essay. By making an outline using topics, sub-topics, and quotes to use in each paragraph, I avoided summarizing the book.

Essay Reflection

This year I feel I have improved on my essay writing, specifically with writing my thesis and focusing on the prompt. On previous essays my thesis was broad, but on my last essay I really tried to be specific. My prompt needed improvement because on my other essays I didn't focus on the prompt and the essays were very general.
-Hannah Beilman

Essay Reflection

In the begining of the year, I didn't explain my quotes well enough and didn't have a strong thesis. I had many points taken off for these two things and it hurt my grade. But since then, I have improved on both of these topics and it shows through my essay.

Essay Improvement

Since the beginning of the year, i feel like i have improved on explaining all my points and making everything flow in my essays. Looking back on my first essay, I can tell that i struggled with being specific and using good transitions. However, now that i look at my second essay, i can see that i explained everything more and used stronger transitions that made my writing flow more.

Essay Reflection

My writing skillds have greatly improved. Two areas that have improved are my word choice and my thesis writing. i have really worked on devoloping these areas because i thought those were places I was losing points.

Essay Improvement

Towards the beginning of the semester I did alright but soon I started generalizing which is where the majority of points got taken off. On my most recent essay I believe I improved on this and started using an even stronger set of vocab to set off the tone for my work.

Essa y Reflection

At the beginning of the year, I failed to answer the prompts completely, and didn't provide enough support for my thesis statement. I feel I have become better at both of these aspects of my essay writing, but I still have a long way to go until I will be content with my writing.
Since the beggining of the year I have improved in my writing. Two areas that I have improved in include thesis writing and explanation of my thoughts.
Since the beginning of the year, I have improved on thesis writing and not summarizing the plot. I'm now getting better grades and I feel better about writing essays.
In my last essay, I didn't do very well with answering the prompt. In this essay, I tried to answer all parts of it. I usually focus on only the first part of a prompt, but I think I did a much better job answering it fully. I think it was also a lot more organized and thought through. Even though this essay was much better than the last, I can still improve a lot on my next essay.

Essay Reflection

Throughout the year i think my essays have improved somewhat, even though my grade got worse with each essay i am gradually learning how to write a well developed essay. Its not as much the grade as it is the learning aspect. With each essay i am able to use more and more things that i learned in class within my essay. So i suppose my essay writing skills have improved as the year goes on.

Essay Reflection

I feel like my essays all together have improved from the beginning of the year. I struggled with summarizing, and quoting and now i feel like my essay all together was more organized and put together. I sometimes still don't feel like i answer enough questions, or give enough detail but it's still a work in process. I'm getting to where i should be and felt like my recent essay was a lot better than my other two have been. The help from Mrs Altman caused me to set up my outline and thesis a lot better and to think more about answering the prompt rather than just rambling trying to make a point along the way. I don't feel like they're such a mess anymore, writing essays isn't as bad as it used to be!

Essay Reflection

I believe that I have improved a lot since the beginning of the year. I started off being very general and repetitive in my essays. I also had trouble fully discussing my thoughts and ideas. With the help of Mrs. Altman, I was able to improve my writing skills. I improved on my content in my essay and I'm now a little less repetitive than before. When I did the Bless Me , Ultima essay, I was able to see what I had improved on and what I still need to work on. I learned that I had improved on my content, but I still needed to work on my fluency/word choice. I also need to work on not being repetitive. I believe that each essay I have done has made me a better writer. Hopefully, I keep improving on my essays.

Essay Reflection

I believe that my writing has indeed improved since the beginning of the year. Something that I improved on was being more specific in my poems. At first I was always using vague and general statements, but now my essays are a lot clearer. Another thing I improved on, with the help of Mrs. Altman, was answering the prompt more correctly. I usually answered all parts of the prompt, but not always in the right way. Especially on my Bless Me Ultima essay. Most of the improvement was really answering what the prompt asked. Overall this year my writing has gotten better, mainly by focusing on little mistakes, and I believe my writing will continue to improve.

Essay Reflection

At the beginning of the year, I had a lot of problems with repeating and overexplaining myself. Often times I would say things multiple times to try and get the point across, which made the essay seem dull and repetitive. I've learned to outline my essay before writing it, which cuts out unnecessary explanations, opinions, and summarizing. i also had trouble connecting my paragraphs to my thesis. Although I'd see how it connected in my head, I wouldn't actually write how it was connected. On the Book of Fred essay I made sure each paragraph was clearly connected to the thesis. I think my ability to write essays has improved tremendously since the beginning of the year.

Essay Reflection

I think that I have really improved on my essay writing since the beginning of the year. First of all, my grammar was absolutely horrible. I didn't seem to know the difference between a comma and a question mark. Now I have gotten my grammar mistakes down to small things like not putting commas in the right place and what not. Second of all I have done a much better job on answering the prompt and staying focused on that prompt. I used to go off on random tangents about things that didn't pertain to the essay prompt whatsoever. But now I can easily focus on the prompt and I am able to find a lot of information to support my thesis statement. Overall Mrs. Altman has helped me tremendously with my essay!

Essay reflection

In this previous essay I really improved on orginization and answering the prompt. I revised my essay multiple times and rewrote it to make sense and really answer the prompt in the best way possible. I did not do these two things very well on my past essays, along with not including a works cited which i have included for this essay.

Essay Improvement

This year my writing has improved because I focused more on details and explaining my quotes more. I have also gotten better at citing the quotes. At the beginning of the year I didn't do so well with those.

Monday, November 8, 2010

Essay Impovements

In this essay i focused more on improving the 2nd part of the topic. In my first two essays, my focus on the topic has only been in the first part of the topic. I tried to change this, by making more of my essay about the second part of my topic. Hopefully by doing this I improve my writing and my essay grade.

Essay Improvements

I think I have improved the most on answering the entire prompt. Comparing my first and second essay, I didn't answer the whole prompt correctly on the first one, whereas on the second one, I was sure to answer all parts. Another thing I have improved on is connecting the body paragraphs to the thesis. Learning to effectively make a connection between everything in the essay has be greatly beneficial to me. Looking at all this skills I have improved on, I hope to improve more and more as the year continues.

A Quote (The Book of Fred) // Michelle Zigler

"There was this shininess in her that I had never seen before in anyone else, and as I sat there, it just radiated all over me, dripping down on me like honey, or some kind of magic golden nectar." (pg. 186)

This quote from the section, Book of Roy from The Book of Fred really caught my attention. Roy talks about this strong feeling he gets from Mary Fred. It's as if her personality is this glittery pollen from a delicate flower that blows upon him. I've always wanted to be that person. I wanted my attitude to give people these great feelings. Unfortunately, my attitude has never been the best. My negativity definitely reflects poorly on others. But Mary Fred's character surely does inspire me to be like her. I want to give people the strong feelings Roy receives from Mary Fred. I want others to want to be around me for my optimism and free spirit and for them to pass it onwards to others. It may take me awhile to find that positivity and keep it, but it's worth a try!

Book of Fred Quote

"...but when she turned to face me I saw that she was laughing uncontrollably." (Bardi 66)

To me this quote represents the first baby step that Mary Fred started to take towards becoming more and more like a Lacker. In her religion they took church very seriously and for Mary Fred to start lauging about a church service just shows that she is starting to become more relaxed with her own beliefs. It also gives you a hint as to what else Mary Fred will do that goes against her religion later in the book and how she becomes more of a teenager.

book of fred quote shelby steingraeber

"...I found myself looking back on the whole thing in a different way. I wasn't sure that if I were someone's mama, I would let them go into a big concrete place with a lot of guns, or that I would let them go alone to some old man with a braided ponytail, no matter who he said he was. It wasn't like i was mad at mama- I understood why she did those things. But it seemed clear to me that I was going to have to start taking care of myself in a new way, that I was going to have to stop relying on people for things as if I was still a child." ( Bardi 289)

I feel this quote is significant in the novel because it displays an " awakening" moment for Mary Fred. It is in this moment that she realizes that she must not let others influence her so greatly, and become a more independant individual.

book of fred quote

"She brushed my hair away from my face and said how glad they all were to see me, and that I could stay there was long as I wanted to, hopefully forever, though she understood if I felt I needed to be with my other family. I noticed that she didn't say 'real' family, and I was glad about that, because at that moment though it surprised me to realize it, Alice and Roy and Heather felt just as real to me as anyone" (289).

Mary Fred says this after she escapes from the Bunker and gets back to Alice's house. This is a moment of realization for her. She now realizes that family doesn't have to be someone that has your blood running through their veins. Family is the group of people that love you, and that you love back the same amount, or even more. Mary Fred thought she knew what family was, but she was wrong. After living with Alice, Roy and Heather she got a better sense of what love and family meant. Before she was unsure of what direction she wanted to go with her life. But now, after all she has been through, she knows that she wants to be right there living with Alice.

Book of Fred Quote

"I pick up a Santa Doll, but M.F. makes me put it back- she says Santa has nothing to do with Christmas, really, and that if I read the historical information I would know that." (Bardi 142-143)

This is one of my favorite quotes in the whole book. It perfectly shows the Sarcasm the Heather radiates and the extent of M.F's bluntness. These 2 qualities always keep the conversations between Heather and M.F fresh and funny.

Book of Fred Quote

"I guess people don't always know when they don't know what they're doing. That's what life is like, you just kind of stab around in the dark until you fiind out, i guess" (104).

I think that this is a perfect quote to show a life lesson. Mary Fred doesnt understand how the people can let the cows die and Alice trys to explain it to her by comparing it to life. And this quote also explains what Alice is going through, she had no idea what she was getting into when she chose to foster Mary Fred but as the novel goes onshe begins to figure it out.

Book of Fred Quote

"Mary Fred I wish you'd wake up...the truth is I really miss you."

This quote from Uncle Roy really surprised me. Up until this point I didn't think he had any feelings for anyone but himself. Yes Roy had mentioned how he had somewhat greatful feelings towards Mary Fred I didn't think he would ever actually be there when times got tough. It's not like he had ever been there any other time.

Book Of Fred Quote!

"Theres something in her voice that makes me feel as excited as i was just wishing i was, like we have some big plan to go bring joy and waffles to those less fortunate than us..." (Bardi 154)

I think this shows the significance Mary Fred has on Heathers life because normally Heather is not all excited for Christmas at all. But when Mary Fred comes running up to Heathers room, Heather feels just as excited like she is supposed to. This just shows that Mary Fred has had a very positive impact on Heathers life.

Book of Fred Quote

"'Oh, Alice,' she said, grasping for breath, 'I don't know what that was, but it sure wasn't church.' She started to laugh some more, and something about her laughter was so infectious that I started giggling too as she went over some parts of the service that she had found particularly striking."
I thought it was really cool of Mary Fred to take this moment and laugh at her experience instead of getting upset. She very well could have gotten distressed by going to that funny church, but she found a better way to deal with it. I think we can be a lot happier if we learn to let things go and take the time to laugh. I believe it helps to perk us up and look towards the better things in life.

Book of Fred

"When Mary Fred finally had her meltdown that Sunday, that too was kind of a relief to me" (Bardi 58).

This was interesting because it seems odd that someone would be relieved about another person being upset. I think this was a relief to Alice because it made Mary Fred seem more human at the least. She had gone through some really traumatic junk still maintaining her composure, but really, she was just a kid. After that, Alice probably felt a little more comfortable around Mary Fred. Maybe even able to relate to her a little better.

B.o.F. Quote

"A couple of guys asked M.F. to the dance, but they were jocks, of course, and I explained to her once again that she couldn't go out with jocks because they weren't cool." (Bardi 129)

This quote could seems to be Heather's jealousy kicking in. She does care about image in the book which could be what this is talking about but i find it to be going a different way. Heather believes that if she can't have something then nobody can, especially M.F. This is a prime example of indirect characterization.

The Book of Fred Quote

"'Do you have any nicknames in your family, Mary Fred?''Sometimes everyone calls me M.F." (Bardi 35).
I thought this quote truly explained how reclusive her fundamentalist cult was. To people in common day society M.F. is the acronym for a curse word, but to Mary Fred it is a meaningless nickname.
-Hannah Beilman

BOOK OF FRED QUOTE

"Mary Fred, I wish you'd wake up...The truth is, I really miss you. We all need you. We're used to you now. You have to come back to us"(Bardi 220).

At this point Roy is showing his feelings for Mary Fred, which is a fatherly love for her. This shows that he gets happiness from having Mary Fred around not just from using heroin.

The Book of Fred

" Even the lights make me feel sick beacuse i remember Dad dropping them all around the tree, trying to get them just right, and Mom sitting there laughing at what a perfectonist he was. By the time I finish looking through the box of ornaments, Im ready to just throw up all over the tree."

I though this quote was intersting becuase it kind of related to me. I mean i live with a divorved family i do have moments when things just dont feel the same anymore, because they were so much better when my parents were together. I can kind of relate to how Heather feels when she dosnt want to do things because it reminds her of how things use to be.
"'That's Mary Fred,' I said. "She lives with us.' I said it like I was daring any of them to say anything about her,"

This is the beginning that Roy starts to display his true feelings for Mary Fred and it shows his true character, not just the heroin addict he is made out to be.

Book of Fred quote

" i had never realized that books were just like people's dreams, and once i found myself wondering if that was all the book of Fred was, abig dream somebody had once and written down"(233). This quote when i cam across it really made me think about all the books ive read. it mad me wonder if every word was just a dream somebody had. I want to be a writer and i don't really write about my dreams more about whatever surronds me that really intrgues and grabs my attention and ives me some kind of idea for a story.

B.O.F Quote

"Even the lights make me feel sick because i remember Dad draping them all around the tree, trying to get them just right, and Mom sitting there laughing at what a perfectionist he was. By the time i finish looking through the box of ornaments, i'm ready to just throw up all over the tree." (Bardi 143)

This quote to me just showed how much the divorce of her parents actually effected Heather. Throughout the book you hear a lot about how the divorce effects Alice, but not Heather. It tore her apart just as much as it did to Alice, she just didn't show it as much.

Book O Fred Quote

"I guess people don't always know when they don't know what they're doing. That's what life is, you just kind of stab around in the dark until you find out, I guess" (Bardi 104)

The first part of this quote is true, people can be completly ingorant of what they are doing, thusfore making them unaware if what they are doing is right or wrong. But the second part of this quote is completly wrong, that's not how life is. Truthfully the only way life is a stab in the dark is because sometimes life is nothing but chance and no one can control that. But other than that, everybody has the power to know and hold any knowledge they would like. Life doesn't have to be dark, there are ways to know exactly what someone is doing. No one's life has to be a blur in the dark, that's just an excuse for someone who is too lazy to put in the effort to clear it up.

Quotes

"A couple of guys asked M.F. to the dance, but they were jocks, of corse, and I explained to her once again that she couldn't go out with jocks because they weren't cool." (Bardi, 129)

This quote really shows how Heather cares a lot about image and attempts to mold Mary Fred into someone similar to herself. It also takes a glimpse into Heather's jealousy for Mary Fred and her almost instant popularity.

BoF Quote

"When I wake up on Christmas morning, for a split second I feel excited when I remember what day it is. Then I remember that I'm not five anymore, and that it's more or less an ordinary day." (153)

Heather is numb. She's fallen into a pattern, seen it all before, and is simply bored with her life. There's a reason Mary Fred coming in is a catalyst for the family, and it's because Mary Fred is unique.

Book of Fred Quote

"When I think about it later, I realize that the truth is, I'm jealous. And it's the worst kind of jealousy, the two-way kind. I'm jealous of all those supid football people for taking M.F. away from me, and then the weird part is that I'm also jealous of her" (Bardi 136).

This is significant because Heather realizes she is jealous of Mary Fred for having what Heather wants, confidence. With Mary Fred's confidence comes her popularity. Heather never thought she could be jealous o fMary Fred when she first saw her when she got home from school.

The Book Of Fred Quote!!

"When I took my first look at Mary Fred, I was sure there was no way we could ever be friends. In fact, I didn't even want to be seen with her in public."

This quote really interested me, I just found it interesting because I could finally see Heathers point of view. It helped me understand how she felt...and it gave me a greater understanding of the novel.

Book of Fred Quote

"Sometimes she [Mary Fred] would help me clear up...Sometimes she was able to get Puffin to dry them or even to put them away. Her technique was to lure Puffin into the kitchen with an interesting court case and ten to go on talking to her, handing her a dish towel without comment."

This quote stood out to me because it shows how Mary Fred has eased her way into her new family, and though Heather doesn't realize it now, Mary Fred is influencing her to behave better than she has ever acted before.

Book of Fred Quote

"Like Mary Fred, I needed comforting . . . When I finally went inside, I walked through the house, turning out each light one by one, then lay in bed alone for a while, with darkness all around me" (Bardi 109).
It surprises me just how much of a tortured soul Alice is. Of course she must have went through a bad divorce, but there has been plenty of time for her to at least halfway get over it. It must be horrible to for years, fake a possitive attitude and constantly mourn while alone.

Book of Fred

"As soon as Thanksgiving is over, I start to get this knot in my stomach. I used to like Christmas when i was a little kid, but since my parents got divorced, I've dreaded the holidays."

I can't imagine not liking Christmas. It just seems like such a fun thing and at least you get a week or two off of school.
" ... I went with her without crying, or trying to run away, like my little brothers and sisters were doing. We all went in diferent cars because we were going to different places, and all of them were hanging out the windows yelling for Mama" (Bardi 5).

I was really shocked that Mary Fred was able to hold herself together so well and not cry for her parents like her younger siblings. If it were me being seperated from my family, i probably would not have been able to be so calm.
"You could do anything you want to, Mary Fred," she said, and I could tell she really believed that." (Bardi 290)

I like this quote because it really helps bring the book to a close, Mary Fred finally gets the life she deserves. She is free to do what she wants without the destrictions of The Book of Fred.

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

"... I thought about the way Mary Fred and how bright and cheerful she always seemed, though inside, something entirely different had been going on" (Bardi 84).

Alice was right; Mary Fred was only acting bright and cheerful to please her foster family, while on the inside, she really feels like an outcast towards everyone else. She also thinks about her original family and how they must be feeling the same way as her right now.

Monday, October 11, 2010

"I picked up the remote from the sofa where Heather had thrown it and flicked on the TV. I flipped the channels around..." (Bardi 38).

When I read this quote, I was surprised. Even though Mary Fred's belief is to not watch television and become brainwashed by it, she still turns on the TV and starts to watch it. With how seriously she has been taking her religion, it shocks the reader that she naturally turns the TV on when she usually never watches it.

Social Networking

Social networking can connect us to more people, but I think we might surprised by how much we can disconnect from them as well. The relations we make over Facebook and MySpace are kind of fake. To be perfectly honest, some friends we probably never pay attention to. We got lost in the deception that we are automatically closer to someone when we click "accept". In reality, we just might be loosing the bonds of those who are actually sitting in the room with us, figuratively speaking anyway. We can get so caught up in a social circle online filled with worthless conversions, that we are too distracted to spend time with our family and friends nearby. The communication you make with your friends isn't nearly as real as when you do it over the Internet. There's just something about really being with people that makes the bond stronger. Social networking can just become so addicting, so please don't let it take away from time you can spend with people. I mean, isn't the actual sound of laughter a whole lot better than reading "lol"? I do agree that social networking helps you to keep up with people's lives. However, you may gain more friends, but the ties will be weaker. Don't loose those who are closest to you! They are the people you can turn to, and we need people like that to make it through this life.

Social Networking - Jack Whiteman

Overall, I think that social networking sites like Facebook have a negative effect on society. You see, these sites pull people to them, moving them away from more important things that they were doing. These include work, exercising, and for me importantly, HOMEWORK! These sites are distracting and lowering my in-person social skills when i meet new people. Facebook and other social networking sites yes to have their pros like enhanced communication, but overall their effects have a negative turnout on society.

SHELBY STEINGRAEBER

Overall, I feel social networking sites have a negative effect on society. I think we've all, at one point or another, complained about the " facebook creep"- it can really get annoying when someone constantley comments on everything. Sometimes you just want to admonish their behaviors. With so many facebook friends, you really loose your sense of privacy and leave your life an open book for, in some cases, people you don't event know. While it's a fast and efficient way to communicate, Facebook really isn't worth the privacy risks involved in having a profile on this social networking site

Social networking

In my opinion Social networking has both its Cons and Pros, it provides communication for those many families who are not near each other. I dont think social networking will cause us to rather use the computer as our source of communication instead of meeting Face-to-Face it is just a more efficient and cheaper way to stay in touch. I for one prefer Face-to-Face friends and don't revolve around Social networking sites. I dont think it is the sites altogether but rather the people using the sites. It seems as if when on sites like facebook you feel as if showing that you have home training or some sort of intelliegence is not necessary. People who use words like "bruh" or "Cuz" instead of because and other unnecessary slang are a few people giving Social networking sites a bad repitation. Also when people are going around posting threats and who they love and whatnot i see it as a way that people can make those unknown friends jealous or make themselves seem more superior than they actually are. Overall i think that as of now there are faults in social networking sites but over time the good and bad will balance out.

socail networking

I believe that social netowrking has a negative effect on society. It is pulling people away from talking face to face and people are finding it easier to talk over facebook or myspace. Also it gives the people the affect of making them feel like they have a barrier inbetween them and that they can say whta ever they want on facebook to whoever they want. Freinds is another big deal. People think its very cool to add as many friends as they possibly can on facebook, but are all these people their accual friends? The answer is usually no, your just adding people beacuse you know the name or you want to add as many people as you can.

Social Networking-Nikki Schulz

In my own personal opinion I would say that social networking has overall had a negative impact on society and especially highschool students. I know many people that find themselves on Facebook when their supposed to be doing homework. Social networking has also increased cyberbullying and it is an easy access for predators to search up teenage girls who are very vunerable. I think the age requirement to even have a Facebook should be increased because obviously most teens can't handle it. Yes, Facebook may be helpful when it comes to finding old friends but overall it's a distraction and a waste of time.

Social Networking-Lauren Pellegrini

I think that social networking has a negative effect on society. Without social networking people would spend less time on the internet and more time actually doing imprtant things. And it is a big distraction when I am doing my homework.
I think that social networking can have an overall positive effect on our generation. we can connect with our friends and track organizations that we are part of. We can share information with our friends and keep in contact with people who live in other states.

Social Networking- Meaghan Hill

In my opinion, social networking has had an overall negative effect on society. It takes up time and causes me to procrastinate a million times more than i normally would. It makes it harder to focus on doing work on the computer or on school in general. It takes away from personal face to face conversations and friends, while a computer can help keep in touch, theres such thing as a phonecall. I just think it's hurting society overall.

Social Networking

I believe that social networking has had an overall negative impact. There are some good things about it, but it has done more harm than good in my opinion. I think if your smart enough about it that its not that harmful, but some people can be very vacuous about these things.

Social networks-Kaylin C.

Social networks, in my opinion, have had an overall negative effect on society. Yeah, you can stay in touch with people and all that junk , but that's what phones, paper, and pens are for. You tend to lose that personal, face-to-face connection that's nessesary to grow all relationships. I'm not talkin' like the "Hey, we should hang out, bla, bla, bla" or whatever, I'm talkin the when people only "talk" on facebook but don't say didly when they see them anywhere else. The other thing is the safty issue. There are a lot of freaks out there who prey on young people. Kids are dumb though too, and post all this information about themselves and talk to some creeper-mugee who they don't know. That leads to trouble as well. So I'd say, overall, social networking sites are just a poopie idea.

Social Networking Sites

Even though all the socail networking sites help us get in contact and catch up with people, I think they do more harm then good. People say that sites like Facebook and Myspace help them connect with their friends and communicate easier. That is all fine and good, but the dangers that come with those sites out weight the positive. These sites are havens for sexual predators looking for young, unsuspecting, rebelious defenseless teens. Like it or not, that's what most of us are. Not to mention the things that social networking sites bring us aren't anything we couldn't do on our own. The sites really give us an excuse to be either busier, or lazier. Overall I'd say if something like social networking sites put us in danger, which they do, they aren't worth the problems and concerns.
I think socail networks are mostly a bad thing. They make it addicting and it has become more of a billboard than a place to stay connected and to to friends and family.

Networking sites

I think networking sites are both a good thing and a bad thing. On one point you can talk to family and friends who live far away. But a bad thing is your profile, your photos and all your posta arent protected. Any random person can just go through any thing and everything you have on that account. They could even find out exactly where you live and go to school.

Social Networking

I believe social networking has had a negative influence on today’s society. Many of these sites have millions of followers; people can connect with friends, but they can also connect with sexual predators, and meet hackers. Personal information can be displayed on theses sites causing privacy issues, there are several accounts demonstrating the harmful outcomes of this epidemic, “three local men, Mario Rojas, Leonardo Barroso and Victor Rodriguez, have burglarized more than 18 homes in the Nashua area of New Hampshire simply by checking status updates on Facebook and then pillaging the houses of victims who announced on the social network that they were not home” (New York Times). This is one account that demonstrates the depressing impact these sites can have. Overall the social networking sites are a negative impact on this generation and those to come.
-Hannah Beilman

Social Networking

I believe that social networking is one of the most dangerous things someone could get into. There are privacy features ya, but if someone could hack into the pentagon you think a private facebook could stop those predators out there. They are crazy that is why they do what they do. They may be useful to give you information that you may have picked up if you pay attention at school. People also seem to feel that if they say something on the computer, nothing will happen or they feel invincible. This is especially true for teens. They feel tough, though they are cowards using their computers to say what they cannot say face-to-face. It is easy for people to learn about you, but am I wrong when I say people often put fake stuff on these sites (ever heard Brad Paisley's song Online). You learn less than you would in a face-to-face conversation. You can tell so much by body language and voice tone. They may be acting sarcastic but would you know? Just by being around someone you can tell a lot about them whether you mentally realize it or not. Even when we watch what we say on these sites, something always slips. This is why I avoid these time-consuming, pointless sites altogether.

Social Networking Sites Stance

My stance on social networking is that it has an overall negative impact on society though their are positive aspects. The reason why I say it's negative is because it is a waste of valuable time and is a place where many broadcast inappropriate things that they can get in trouble for in the future.

Social Networks Impact On Society

I believe that social networking has had a negative impact on society because it has changed the way of communication in todays world. On social sites people are sometimes crass to one another, which can hurt us emotionally. Also it is dangerous because it allows strangers to interlope on your life, which in the end could end to dangers. Lastly it has made communicating too easy, now instead of talking face to face we talk through text, which changes our communication ways in negative ways.

My stance on social networking

I find social networking to be a force that destroys many of the things I value. It causes an assimilation of culture that then spreads to cover the world. This culture makes it normal to lose the unspoken social rules and thus forget how to be polite. It’s hard to remember that another human is on the other end of the message. I make the same mistake with e-mails alone; I ask my parents to proofread almost all the e-mails I send for accidental tone, which still doesn’t always work. Fact is, nothing can beat face-to-face communication, as almost all of communication is non-verbal. This means body language, facial expression, even inflection, changes in the pitch of the speaker’s voice, provide more information than the words being said. Social networking removes the human aspect of communication, even with use of emoticons, which look extremely unprofessional in any media, and give the impression of low intelligence. Thus, social networking removes identity of culture, removes social restraints that people keep to protect friendships, cut out most of communication due to the media used, and give off the impression of dwindling intelligence. Not a very positive effect, as I see it.

Social Networking Sites

Looking at how popular Facebook, MySpace, and other social networking sites have become, it presents a problem within our generation. With all of the homework allocated to us, the chores we have to do, along with other responsibilities of being a teenager, these sites become a distraction. Assignments using the computer, for instance, makes it easy to log onto Facebook or MySpace while we're supposed to be finishing homework. Another example of a problem of the social networking sites is the dangers of hackers and online predators. Teens and even adults put personal information on their profiles, allowing complete strangers to find out what kind of person they are. Along with Internet predators, hackers love Facebook. They can log into accounts that aren't theirs and can give other computers viruses. Although social networking sites are a big part of our lives with communication and keeping up to date with friends and family, they also have negative effects on our lives as well.

A interloper broke into my house last night, and gave me a huge dint in the left-side of my head. He beguiled me into defraying for his Drug addiction. His name was Seth. I admonish him very much. Seth was a crass fool. Yet, I was unknown to the fact that Mrs. Altman allocated Seth to confront me. Seth was vicariously living his life like Al Pacino. Seth is a fruit, he smells like marshmallows, and I am allocating him to go take a bath.

Hello! It's Michelle Zigler!

Hey, this is Michelle. I'm in Mrs. Altman's 5th hour. I'm so excited to be blogging with my classmates! I enjoy blogging quite a lot. Anytime free time I have I write about my day. Besides blogging I love to read, but unfortunately school seems to have taken over my life and I never have time for anything anymore! I also love to write. Once out of college (if I decide to go) I hope to move to New York City to start my writing career. I know I won't make a lot of money and I really do not care. Living the life as a starving artist seems so exciting and such a thrill! I cannot wait to move to the Big Apple. Well, that's just a little peek into my life!
This is Seth Cooper and over the summer I went and played in two national tournaments in Detroit and San Jose. In Detroit we placed 2nd and in San Jose we placed 3rd, both tournaments had the best players in the country at my age. Also I swam in both the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean this summer. ( San Jose, California...west coast and Charleston, South Carolina...east coast)

Something about me

I'm considering the possibility of me making people hats for a living. Could be fun.
