I think that this is a perfect quote to show a life lesson. Mary Fred doesnt understand how the people can let the cows die and Alice trys to explain it to her by comparing it to life.And this quote also explains what Alice is going through, she had no idea what she was getting into when she chose to foster Mary Fred but as the novel goes onshe begins to figure it out.
I agree that this quote could almost be a theme for the book. Almost all of the charcters seem to just be blindly moving along hoping that they come across an obstacle that they have to make a choice about.
