"... I thought about the way Mary Fred and how bright and cheerful she always seemed, though inside, something entirely different had been going on" (Bardi 84).

Alice was right; Mary Fred was only acting bright and cheerful to please her foster family, while on the inside, she really feels like an outcast towards everyone else. She also thinks about her original family and how they must be feeling the same way as her right now.

  1. I agree. But she was just trying to keep herself occupied (such as cleaning) just so she wouldn't think about her family that much.

  2. I just think she didnt want her foster family to worry too much about her or give her more attention than she wanted.

  3. I think she didn't wat=nt Alice to feel like it was her fault or that she needed to carry some of the burden for Mary Fred.
