To me this quote represents the first baby step that Mary Fred started to take towards becoming more and more like a Lacker. In her religion they took church very seriously and for Mary Fred to start lauging about a church service just shows that she is starting to become more relaxed with her own beliefs. It also gives you a hint as to what else Mary Fred will do that goes against her religion later in the book and how she becomes more of a teenager.
